I am captivated by passing glimpses of light in nature. My point of view borrows from romanticism, with a postmodern angle. Life can be busy, and our attention spans are often too short. The glimpses we see are blurred, transient, and abstracted by our shattered ability to be still. When we work to be mindful, art and nature can powerfully ground us. Through the use of color and brushwork, I hope to serve as a channel for the energy that flows in between these places and refreshes, renews and restores our souls.

In my process, I aim to translate the ephemeral qualities of light and nature through visual layers of color, texture and movement. Painting allows me to create richness of color and depth of meaning, and experimenting with brushwork and mark making allows me to play with the viewer’s perception of reflected light as it is skewed by our contemporary society.

My work is created intuitively through memory and mindful presence. Often landscapes coalesce on the canvas. At times, they will be reminiscent of actual places I have spent time exploring locally in Virginia and internationally. More often than not, they emerge as amalgamations of experiences, memories and senses. My mark making is left creatively undone in a nod to transience. I believe that the magic of my art–and life–lies in the spaces in between.
